BACKGROUND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY MARA

History 1956, 1965, 1967, 1996
UiTM is significantly more freshly
remembered by its establishment as the Institute of Technology MARA (ITM) in
1967. The Institute is a result of Malaysian vision leaders, especially former
second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak. During his time as 'Father of
Development', one of the country's missions focused on efforts to develop the
socioeconomic of the bumiputeras in the country. Allaryarham Tun Abdul Razak
has laid the foundation of a campus on 300 acres of land in Shah Alam on
October 14, 1967. This is Allaryarham Tun to make ITM a catalyst to produce all
available resources and produce and multiply the number of trained and
qualified Bumiputera graduates only in science and technology and in other
fields. While it is currently in the university status, it is impossible to
forget about the beginning of this institution. UiTM's history sketches began
in 1956 with the presence of the RIDA Board of Latehan.

Board of Latehan 1956 - 1965
ground
breaking
The establishment of the RIDA Latehan Hall
was established following the visit of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to the domestic
development program in 1951. A working papers containing RIDA's establishment
and its objective of developing and improving the economic status of rural
communities were found. The Ministry of Rural and Industrial Development has
two main centers under its umbrella namely RIDA (Kuala Lumpur) and RIDA Latehan
Hall (Petaling Jaya).
The RIDA Latehan Hall commenced its
operation in November 1956 and was officially opened by the Minister of Trade
and Industry on October 14, 1957. Several professional courses offered by
international bodies such as the London Chamber of Commerce, the Australian
Chartered Secretary of Management have been offered at RIDA's Latehan Hall. In
1964, RIDA's Latehan Hall held its first convocation ceremony and has witnessed
a total of 50 graduates awarded by Y.A.B. Tun Abdul Razak, then Prime Minister
of Malaysia.
MARA
College 1965 - 1967
The RIDA Latehan Hall was renamed to MARA
College in June 1965. According to Y.A.B. Tun Abdul Razak, this name change is
aimed at giving new breath and aspiration to the training center itself. The
exchange also indicates that this institution is no longer under the
jurisdiction of RIDA, but instead becomes one of the most important units of
the MARA Training Division.
MARA, the abbreviation for Majlis Amanah
Rakyat has taken over this institution and further strengthened RIDA's role and
responsibility. In 1966, when the British Institute of Management abolished the
"Exam Exam" offer, the MARA college started its own Diploma in
Business Studies program. The program has been recognized internationally by
the Ealing Technical College of London who is also an external examiner.
Institute
of Technology MARA 1967 - 1999
The results of research and research
undertaken by the government with the help of the United Nations in 1965 state
that the country faces a shortage of trained workers at professional and
semi-professional levels among Bumiputeras. To overcome this problem, 300 acres
of land in Shah Alam has been approved to be the MARA college campus site. On
October 14, 1967, the foundation stone for the campus construction was laid
down by Y.A.B. Tun Abdul Razak and thus, the Maktab MARA name was officially
converted to MARA Institute of Technology.
The development of ITM over the years has
been said to grow rapidly following the development of its learning program,
which is in line with the rising needs of the workforce at that time. The
various fields of study have resulted in collaboration with international
institutions and ITM has offered advanced Diploma programs on par with a degree
program. The development of ITM can be seen within a three-phase period that
covers a period of 32 years as a whole. The first phase (1967-1976) was dedicated
to the declaration of ITM as an independent body having a 300 acre campus in
Shah Alam and placed under the care of the Ministry of Rural Development. The
second phase (1976-1996) shows ITM with its ability in higher education. It has
led to the release of ITM Act 1976 which places ITM under the Ministry of
Education. The third phase (1996-1999) took place following the decision of the
1976 amendments which placed ITM on par with other universities in the country.
ITM has been mandated with full power to operate as a university but remains
with its original name until 1999. Here are the conversions that have been
made:
1. ITM administration
body, Council Board, has been changed to Board Member Director with more
involvement from private sector representatives;
2. The Board members are
authorized to enact on behalf of the Institute
3. The Senate has been
established
4. Many ITM chiefs are
undergoing an exchange process. Director changed to Rector, Chief of Officer to
Provos, while Head and Senior Lecturer was changed to Professor and Associate Professor
5. Each department is named
Faculty
6. ITM is authorized to
award a doctorate
7. ITM has been given the
privilege to set up a branch and campus course abroad with the approval of the
Ministry of Education
8. ITM has been given
additional powers to enable it to do business, engaged in investing, establishing a company and engaging in research commercial
9. The disciplinary powers
among officers have been transferred from the Ministry to board of directors
10. To improve staff accountability,
ITM is authorized to charge a surcharge
11. The right of a student's
procedure in any discussion of behavior and discipline tightened. At that time,
ITM established a branch in every state. The first campus was built in Sabah in 1973 and the last campus was in Kuala Pilah, Ninth State in June 1999. Almost
all campuses the branch commenced operations at the temporary premise, however,
this establishment has strategy and orderly plan. All branch campuses have
moved to the location which remains except for the Kuala Pilah campus.
